During the Beijing 2008 Olympics, GoDaddy.com, the world’s largest domain name host has been blocked from being accessed in China. This has caused commotion among a large number of Chinese online entrepreneurs who cannot access their account. Those who are selling domain names weren’t able to do business for almost a month and some went through alot of inconveniences to renew their registration.
According to reports, GoDaddy.com was blocked during the Olympics to prevent Chinese nationals from registering domain names after the names of Chinese athletes who won (Gold, Silver or Bronze) in the Olympics. The Chinese government has a policy of protecting famous names from being registered and allows only the owner the right to register it as his/her domain name.
If domain names were to be registered outside China, it will be difficult for the Chinese government to retrieve them. Hence, GoDaddy.com, which is US-based and not to mention the largest, was blocked.
There were speculations that the blocking of GoDaddy will be permanent. But today, I visited GoDaddy.com and there it was.
What’s really surprising is the fact that Blogger (Blospot) wasn’t blocked during the duration of the Olympics considering the thousands of blogs criticizing China’s hosting of the 2008 Olympics. I just hope that the Great Firewall doesn’t block Blogger blogs anytime soon.

Once a year, Blog Action Day unites bloggers, podcasters and videocasters worldwide to post about the same issue on the same day. A U.N. backed nonprofit event, Blog Action Day aims to raise awareness and encourage discussions of issues of global concern.

Last year (2007), Blog Action Day successfully united more than 15,800 bloggers to step-away from their usual routine blog topic and write about the Environment. The event has generated buzz both from online and traditional media (Digg, Reddit, BBC, Reuters, Manila Standard etc.), and successfully brought environmental issues and concerns to the attention of the world.
This year (2008), Blog Action Day is inviting all publishers to unite once again. This time, to post about “Poverty”. [click to continue...]

One of the reasons why Wordpress is so much better than Blogger is the countless Free and Premium Wordpress Themes available to choose from. The templates available for Blogger users on the other hand is so limited. But due to the consistent increase in the number of Blogger users, more and more Blogger templates are made available to them. The fancied Wordpress themes are no longer exclusive to Wordpress users as more of them are converted to Blogger templates.
PassionDuo Blogger Template

PassionDuo Template was created for Daily Blog Tips by DesignSaurus as a WordPress theme. eBlog Templates then converted it into Blogger which you can download for free once you register (registration is also FREE). [click to continue...]

I just got back to China from a two months long vacation in the Philippines. To my surprise, when I was about to update my blog, I couldn’t access it. I tried using other computers but I just can’t open my blog. I also checked the status of my blog with my host and there seems to be no problem. I then used a proxy to view it and it perfectly working.

My blog has been blocked by the Great Firewall of China. Considering that TheWeblogZone is all about blogging and that I have not written anything against China, why would my blog be blocked? [click to continue...]

This week I’ve noticed that some of the blogs I regularly visit are looking for contributors or guest bloggers to write for them. I would understand why they resort to this strategy to be able to provide fresh content to their readers, especially that most of them are blogging on a part time basis.

Definitely, there are benefits of opening your blog to willing contributors or guest bloggers. But at the same time, this could do more harm to your blog than the sought benefits. Today’s post will introduce you to some reasons why you should not welcome contributors or guest bloggers. [click to continue...]

Research shows that more than 65% of the netizens don’t like a blog that takes forever to download. In today’s busy lifestyle, no one would like to waste their time to wait for your blog to download. As a rule of thumb, your blog should download within the next 12 seconds once it has been accessed. Otherwise, you will be missing a huge amount of traffic and you have just deprived your blog of repeat visit.

Like I’ve said before, traffic is the lifeblood of most blogs. Traffic enables bloggers to successfully monetize their blogs. Simply put, the higher the traffic your blog gets the higher the potential revenue is. It is therefore crucial that you make sure your blog downloads fast to avoid losing traffic and to get the most benefit out of it. [click to continue...]
