Useful Tips In Building Credibility For Your Blog

by TheWeblogZone on August 8, 2008

The Blogosphere is getting overcrowded with thousands of blogs created everyday. This situation has created an intense competition among bloggers in attracting readers and subscribers. With the huge number of blogs to choose from, the netizens have now become picky with the blogs they read. This situation has placed credibility a top consideration for netizens when selecting blogs to read and subscribe to. As a general rule, the more credible your blog is, the more readers and subscribers you get.

Credibility

Apparently, blogs with credibility are the blogs that are mostly read. So if you want to increase your readership, you need to build credibility. But what makes a blog credible and how do you build it? Today’s post explores the possible techniques you can do to improve your blog’s credibility, therefore, increasing your readership.

Tips To Build a Credible Blog

Choose a Niche

Having a niche or a specific topic to blog about is so far the most effective way to build credibilty for your blog and yourself as a blogger. In contrast to those who blog about all sort of topics, niche blogging allows a blogger to focus and concentrate on a certain topic, preferably of his mastery which in turn makes him an authority. For the same reason, John Chow is considered as a more credible source of information about ‘making money online’ than Rose DesRochers, who blogs about different things.

Create Useful and Informative Content

Content is king but only when it’s useful and informative. Several monarchs and governments have been overthrown because of their lack of competence… so as with content. Your blog’s content partly defines what kind of blog you have. If your blog contents are nothing of value to anyone, then it shouldn’t be considered credible. People read blogs for certain reasons but mostly to gather useful information. If you want to earn credibility for your blog and for yourself, here are a few suggestions you can do to improve your blog content.

  • Know your readers and subscribers. Understand their needs and wants.
  • Blog about what your blog readers and subscribers need and want.
  • Make sure that you’re giving your readers and subscribers relevant and valuable information.
  • Concretize your post with your own personal experiences.

Link To Useful, Related and Informative Blogs

While some bloggers are generous in giving links, most bloggers remain reluctant. Search engine optimization is probably the reason why most bloggers don’t link to other blogs. Assuming that I’m creating a post about ‘Increasing Blog Traffic’ and I have linked to another post that has the same topic, the end result will be a higher position for the post I linked to in the search engine result page.

Linking to other blog posts that are relevant to your blog may improve their page rank and search engine position but this will also improve your credibility. Linking to other blogs will send a message to your readers and subscribers that you are a wide reader. In fact, your blog readers will appreciate supplementary information that you provide through linking to other blogs. Just make sure that you link to quality posts that are relevant to yours.

If you don’t want to share link juice to other blogs, which I don’t encourage, you can always use the rel=”nofollow” attribute. This will instruct Google to disregard the link as a vote to the site you linked to.

Create or Use a Professional Blog Template

The appearance of your blog has a huge impact on your blog’s credibility. Usually, netizens judge blogs based on their appearance and design. It is therefore advantageous that you invest on the looks and feel of your blog. That shouldn’t be a problem if you are knowledgeable of codes. Alternatively, you can hire a web designer or simply be patient to browse free blog themes that will suit your requirements.

Network With Other Bloggers

Establishing presence in the Blogosphere is another effective mechanism to establish credibility for yourself and for your blog. This can be achieved in several ways but here are some of my suggestions. Take note that the following tips require you to network with other blogs and websites. A good interpersonal skill will be very useful.

Get Your Blog Reviewed by Other Bloggers

Blog review is another simple yet effective strategy to build credibility for your blog and yourself as blogger. But getting other bloggers to review your blog is the challenging part. This is easy when your blog is really fantastic and when you have lots of blogger friends. Reviews will naturally come in. Most of the reviews made for TheWeblogZone are created by my friends over at BlogCatalog. This means, you should have a huge network of friends. You can start collecting them through social networks and media.

Alternatively, you have the option of paying other bloggers to review your blog. ReviewMe, SponsoredReviews and PayPerPost are the most popular sites that offer such kind of service.

Use a Domain Name

If you are using a domain name, people visiting your blog will think that you are a serious blogger. This alone will increase your blog’s credibility. Registering your own domain name has become affordable nowadays so having one for your blog shouldn’t be difficult. You can get more information about registering your own domain name at Godaddy.com.

There you have it. I hope that you got some useful ideas in building your blog’s credibility and yourself as a blogger from the tips listed above. Like always, I’d like to hear from you. I’m sure that you have something to add to my list so feel free to drop it through the comment.

Thank you for your time. :)

Successful Search Engine Optimization

by TheWeblogZone on August 6, 2008

I am thrilled to find out that after optimizing my blog for the keywords “Thesis Wordpress Theme“, I’m now ranked second in the Google search result page out of the 267,000 pages. My review of the Thesis Wordpress Theme is even higher than Darren’s of Problogger. Here’s a screenshot of the Google search result page (as of August 5, 2008).

Google Search Result Page

As a result of ranking high on such keyword, I started receiving traffic from Google from those who are looking for more information about the Thesis Wordpress Theme. Unfortunately, up until now, I haven’t converted any of those traffic into actual sales. Although I’m still hopeful as some bloggers promised to purchase the Thesis Wordpress Theme through my referral link. :)

Here are a few things that I’ve learned from my successful search engine optimization.

  • Search engine ranking constantly changes. SEO should therefore be a continuous process.
  • It is possible to outrank the more established blogs provided you do your part of SEOing.
  • A huge part of my search engine optimization technique involved building more links. I believe it’s the most important element of SEO.

In my succeeding posts, I’ll share you the methods I’ve used to optimize my post on Thesis Wordpress Theme for Google and other search engines.

Thank you for your time. Like always, your comments and suggestions are most welcome! ;)

Why Use A Favicon And How To Make One

by TheWeblogZone on August 3, 2008

This blog tutorial teaches you on how to create and set up your own Favicon.

What Is a Favicon?

Favicon, Favorite IconFavicon, also known as favorite icon, page icon, urlicon and website icon is an icon that is associate to a particular website. They are located just before the URL of a website you’re browsing. Browsers that support favicon may display them in the browser’s URL bar, next to the site’s name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page’s title in a tabbed document interface. Some operating systems, like Windows, will also often use the favicon for Internet shortcuts to sites placed on the desktop or in other directories.

As Favicon is becoming more popular among webmasters, more and more internet browsers are now supporting its use.

Why Use a Favicon?

There are many reasons why you should use a favicon on your websites but I will name the three most important.

  1. Favicon can be used for branding purpose. - Branding, which is an important element of blogging, should be a part of your marketing strategies. Through the simple use of a Favicon, you are able to brand your website and improve its recognition.
  2. Favicon enhances the look and feel of your website. - Most webmasters these days use Favicons not only for branding purposes but as a means of enhancing the look and feel of their websites. Since Favicon is easy to create and use, why should you deprive your website of this feature?
  3. Yes. Favicon is easy to set up and it’s FREE! - You don’t have to pay for anything. All you need is sometime to create and put it in your website. The processes involved is as easy as 123.

How To Make and Use a Favicon?

Like I said awhile ago, making and using a favicon is as easy as 123. Here are the three things you need to do.

  1. First, you need to choose an image you want to use as your favicon. Use any of these tools to compress and resize for use as a favicon.ico. Just upload your image and the tools will automatically convert it to Favicon. [Dynamic Drive, Favicon Generator, Degraeve and Favicon Genertor]
  2. When your Favicon is ready, upload it to your image gallery or host it for free at FileDen (requires registration).
  3. Lastly, add the Favicon to your web page by uploading favicon.ico to the root of your website and inserting the following HTML tag between the <head></head> tags of your web page.

<link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”Replace This With the URL of your Favicon”>

When you’re done with the above steps, refresh your browser. Your Favicon should have appeared by now. If you’re having trouble setting up your Favicon, just drop me a message or leave a comment to this post.

Thank you for your time and your comments are most welcome. ;)

Sitemeter - Causing Blogs To Crash

by TheWeblogZone on August 2, 2008

There are bloggers reporting that their blogs crash when viewed with IE7. Apparently, all of them are using Sitemeter in their blogs.

As one of the users of Sitemeter, I also had the same problem. I then tried removing Sitemeter from my blog and see if the problem will be resolved. Right after I took off Sitemeter, my blog starts to show up when opened with IE7.

sitemap error

As to what is causing Sitemeter to crash websites using it is not yet clear. And at the moment, the only solution to prevent your blog from crashing is to remove Sitemeter. This means, you won’t be able to monitor your traffic for today. Alternatively, you can use other tracking tools such as Google Analytics.

UPDATE

Check TheWeblogZone later for updates about this problem. Darren of Problogger.net has already sent a message to the Sitemeter Administrators.

Hopefully, this problem will be resolved soon.
